TREVOR BARKER OVAL
Bayside City Council
October 2013 – March 2014
Home of the Sandringham Football Club and the Sandringham Dragons and located in the heart of Bayside City Council with a thriving and sport driven community is Trevor Barker Oval. A premium high performing AFL field that can now house large community events, VFL football matches and training sessions for the elite through to grassroots.
The redevelopment of this site included a complex reconstruction that would see the facility become the premier elite standard AFL playing surface the City of Bayside could showcase for years to come. ETP Turf were engaged to project manage the construction and provide specialised agronomic consultancy during and post completion to ensure the initial vision was brought to fruition.
ETP Turf worked closely with Council, contractors and key stakeholders to ensure the project was delivered within the set timeframes in order to start the Zebras 2014 April season, whilst carefully managing the projects multiple challenges including site access, varying climatic conditions, overlapping contractor activity and methodology which included no less than 31 hold points.
The new design included approximately 4km of sub surface drainage, 500 lineal meters of each new spoon drains and fencing, new AFL standard goal posts, interchange and officials boxes, a new automated high DU/SC sub surface drainage system including 2km of irrigation pipes and cables, 70+ heads and 20 valve boxes.
An exceptional end result for Council saw the delivery of a truly high performing, larger sports field surfaced with 17,250m2 of Santa Ana Couch turf; a warm season turf laid atop of a quality 200mm dome shaped sand-based profile featuring a 1% surface fall. The field of play can also be oversewn with a cool season ryegrass during the winter for more durability offering additional protection against excessive wear and maintaining a high-quality looking surface all year round.
